Singapore High Roller Denies Lying About $30M Debt

A wealthy Singaporean has refuted claims that he "lied" in court regarding a AU$40 million credit line at the Star Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia.

Dr. Yew Choy Wong is being sued by the casino for AU$43 million (US$30 million) in gaming debt, which the company claims he accrued on a week-long binge six years ago.

According to the complaint, Wong flew in on one of the casino's private planes to the Gold Coast location in July 2018 to participate in a baccarat event. He had lost $43 million by the time he departed on August 2.

Blank Check

According to The Star, Wong was allowed entry to a $40 million check-cashing establishment the same day he arrived. According to the lawsuit, he gave the casino permission to use a blank check he had given to Star Sydney, the casino's sister property, a year earlier, to settle the debt upon his departure. The cheque fell through.

Wong disputes that he gave the casino permission to use the check to collect the debt, claiming the credit agreement was blank when he signed it.

The defendant claims that on July 28, after growing enraged at dealer errors, he made the decision to give up gaming, but VIP hostesses convinced him to keep going.

The high roller asserts that he explicitly said that he would not cover more losses in the event that the errors persisted, which they did.

In his testimony on Wednesday, Wong stated that he gave his private banker instructions to make sure the cheque bounced due to its advanced age.

"Injusticed Harassment"

The Civil Law Act of Singapore forbids the government from aiding foreign businesses looking to recover debts associated with foreign gaming, hence The Star's initial lawsuit against Wong was unsuccessful.

Wong maintained that the Singapore verdict should be upheld and said that Star's attempts to have him prosecuted in Australia were "unjustified oppression."

However, in April 2021, a judge in Queensland's Supreme Court allowed the case to move on, characterizing it as a “relatively straightforward” damages claim that ought to be decided based on its merits.

Wong was formerly a director of Celton Manx, a company based on the Isle of Man that owns SBOBET, the first sportsbook with an Asian focus to sponsor a Premier League team in England.

Wong left the role in March 2019, shortly after Celton Manx learned of the conflict, a representative for the company informed Casino.org.

Promoted Casinos

A casino promotion is a great way to increase patronage and frequency of visits. For illustration, a casino might give away free gifts or prizes to recent customers. It might also consider using other channels to spread the word about how to win at casinos. Current customers may also be rewarded with seasonal sales incentives. These kinds of promotions can boost client loyalty, but make sure to read the guidelines before participating in any promotional activity.
