The major sports betting news from Election Day was the approval of that type of wagering by Missouri voters; however, upon further inspection, significant events also unfolded in other states like Texas.
In the last legislative session, there was unprecedented momentum for the legalization of sports betting in the second-largest state, but a bill that passed through the State House eventually failed in the Senate. This may be the outcome for comparable initiatives in 2025 as Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) remains in position and Republicans secured an additional seat in the Texas State Senate, giving them control of 20 out of 31 seats in that chamber, an increase from 19 when a sports betting proposal failed in 2023.

The upcoming legislative session in Texas begins on Jan. 14, and as of now, it looks like sports betting is not a focus for Senate Republicans.
Sports betting necessitates a change to the Texas constitution, which implies that the matter needs the approval of two-thirds of both the House and Senate before it can be presented to voters as a ballot question.
Obtaining that majority is possible in the Republican-led House, but the Senate presents a different challenge. Patrick controls the agenda in that chamber, and his party is only one vote away from a two-thirds majority, which restricts Democrats' choices for pushing forward sports betting legislation.
“The alternative path, in which Democrats supply up to 11 votes and thus need fewer Republicans, is also unlikely because Senate President Dan Patrick reportedly will not permit Democrats to help pass a bill in any significant way,” added EKG.
Before Election Day, there was some speculation about Patrick possibly being appointed to a role in the new Trump Administration. So far, that hasn’t occurred, but even if it does, it doesn’t necessarily reduce the chances of sports betting being legalized in Texas in the near future because the politicians seen as his most credible successors share similar views on expanding gaming.
By prohibiting mobile sports betting, Texas stands to lose over $1 billion in new tax income and around 8,000 job opportunities, making the influence of 2024 Election Day less significant for sports betting advocates in the state.
Initially, agreement among state political analysts and the gaming sector suggested that 2025 was probably an improbable year for sports betting in Texas. Following the 2023 setback, the aspiration has been to pass the constitutional amendment in 2027, presenting the ballot question to voters that November, and launching sports betting ahead of the 2028 football season.
Secondly, the political atmosphere in 2024 favored Republicans advancing in the already red Texas, which occurred as President-elect Trump won the state by a margin significantly greater than in his 2016 and 2020 campaigns.
